ART IS THE ONLY WAY TO RUN AWAY WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

This script was written by my daughter, Jane:

“ART IS THE MOST INTENSE MODE OF INDIVIDUALISM THE WORLD HAS KNOWN”

The artist whose work you see is Rita Callan. A NYC native, my mother moved to Nyack in 1958 with my dad, Charles and their three young children, Jane, Chuck and Jimmy. Her life was (and is) an active and fulfilling one. Besides helping to raise us, she worked outside the house and volunteered for many different causes, with little time to pursue her natural talent in drawing and painting.

Upon retirement she began to pursue her artistic side, inspired by her first art teacher and it was in this class that Rita began to express herself through her art.

She branched out from charcoal to oil, pastels and watercolor. My mother has painted portraits, landscapes still life and old houses. As an aside she paints cards for mailing and framing and has several steady customers. She has been featured in many exhibits in Rockland County.

Rita has taken lessons with several teachers (regrettably her first teacher moved to another state). However, she considers herself a “Sunday painter”.

Presently, she teaches English as a second language. My mother volunteers two nights a week and finds it most rewarding.

My brothers and I, among many, find our mother to be a person of warmth, intelligence and spirit. Her seven grandchildren, one grandson and six granddaughters, now ranging in ages 10 to 25, simply adore her. In her portraits you will see serious and emotion filled faces, in her still life, her vivid colors, and in her paintings en pleine aire, the vibrancy and beauty of nature.

Mom will also include pictures of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren.

Charlie's Cuisine

An oil painting composed by my dear husband who wanted a French loaf of bread along with the bottle of wine.  We both had fun with this one.  I'll always keep this one in memory of him.

Missionary Girl

The Missionary Girl done in pastel from a charitable magazine was a challenge.  I believe I was successful in transferring a feeling of loneliness.  Notice her creation of a "used" shirt to protect her from the sun.

Path pass Farmhouse

The Farmhouse painting is in watercolor.  Had a little trouble with distance so I added the "fence" sticks and framed it myself.

Round Bowl with Flowers

This is a water color  which seems to be my current media.

Anemones in White Pitcher

This was done in oil on canvas.  I like the colors.  It wasn't a project.  Finished it in no time.  Also a challenge.

Blue Vase with Flowers

I tried to capture my dark and light reflections.  I believe I succeeded in oil and happy to say I framed this one too.

Flowers in White Vase.

I needed a large picture for over my fireplace so I did this one in pastel, framed it myself, and then hung it.  Looks pretty good over the fireplace.

This is my favorite done in pastel which I delight in looking at first in the morning.

MY AFRICAN BOY

I painted my house in oil on canvas some years ago.  The trees have grown and my house is now painted  a tan/yellow with a blue door.  It looked this way over 30 years ago.  The little Japanese Maple is as tall as the house and the front Japanese Maple is gone.  Regrettably from a disease.
