ART IS THE ONLY WAY TO RUN AWAY WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

This script was written by my daughter, Jane:

“ART IS THE MOST INTENSE MODE OF INDIVIDUALISM THE WORLD HAS KNOWN”

The artist whose work you see is Rita Callan. A NYC native, my mother moved to Nyack in 1958 with my dad, Charles and their three young children, Jane, Chuck and Jimmy. Her life was (and is) an active and fulfilling one. Besides helping to raise us, she worked outside the house and volunteered for many different causes, with little time to pursue her natural talent in drawing and painting.

Upon retirement she began to pursue her artistic side, inspired by her first art teacher and it was in this class that Rita began to express herself through her art.

She branched out from charcoal to oil, pastels and watercolor. My mother has painted portraits, landscapes still life and old houses. As an aside she paints cards for mailing and framing and has several steady customers. She has been featured in many exhibits in Rockland County.

Rita has taken lessons with several teachers (regrettably her first teacher moved to another state). However, she considers herself a “Sunday painter”.

Presently, she teaches English as a second language. My mother volunteers two nights a week and finds it most rewarding.

My brothers and I, among many, find our mother to be a person of warmth, intelligence and spirit. Her seven grandchildren, one grandson and six granddaughters, now ranging in ages 10 to 25, simply adore her. In her portraits you will see serious and emotion filled faces, in her still life, her vivid colors, and in her paintings en pleine aire, the vibrancy and beauty of nature.

Mom will also include pictures of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren.

BEACH SCENE

Oil painting.  This was done when I was into oil.  It's one of a few beach scenes that I've done.   I've always hesitated to do images of lighthouses in the foreground.

Young Chinese Boy

This is a watercolor I did sometime back and was purchased at a silent auction which I donated to One-2-One.  I volunteer teaching English to Spanish speaking people.

Reflection of Vietnam Memorial

In part this appeared on cover of LIFE.  Scrolling in the names reflected actual deceased veterans.  The explosion in upper right corner was the background for a helmeted hero.  I gave this picture to my grandson.

Kitten with Apple

Another watercolor.  A kitten hugging an apple.  All the cat lovers admired this one.  I pretty much changed the colors in the background and foreground.  It was a real joy painting this one.

Rockland Lake - First Snowfall

Watercolor

I had taken a photo of this scene on a really cold winter day and thought about this area which I remember seeing late summer.  I guess I'll have to hop over there in a few months and snap it on a summer day.  (may get a few picnickers).  Maybe I'll switch to oil..

A QUIET WINTER

Another watercolor.  To think when I first began art work, I dreaded doing watercolor because it seemed so unforgiving.  Now I seem to be "trapped" into this media with much affection.  I stuck to  the  browns and entered burnt sienna.

The Red Door

I changed this watercolor and added a tree and a dirt path edging some flowers.  The red door is my focal point with a lighter background to the cottage.

Entrance from the Garden

A vivid watercolor...The green door was a  "happy mistake".  I added a wash of purple in certain areas. Had an enjoyable time with this one.

A scene in Viletta, Italy

This is a scene in the Village of Viletta, visited by my Cousin Paul.  He was quite excited by his visit.  He prepared a genealogy prior to his visit.  It traced back to the birth of my grandfather (Berardino DiNunzio and my grandmother, Maria Christina Ciarletta).  Paul met the Mayor, whose transportation was a bicycle.  The village had a small population with many old ways but certainly updated with the latest technology.  My daughter later visited and verified the description of this colorful, historic area.

It was a dream come true.  Paul's wife, Rebecca, gave this painting to him for his birthday.
